Studies are always great practice.  I feel like you're not not 'blocking' enough in your values to accentuate the form of the face.  Too much of it is a bit muddy.  If you look at Ander Zorn's paintings his faces have huge paint strokes in areas to help give the face volume.   If you look at this piece by him you can see what I mean:

You can literally see his paint strokes and how he constructs the shape of the face with solid strokes of varying values.  You might want to keep your brush at 100% opacity for these studies.
